WATER WISE KIDS

A City of Bozeman and MOSS Partnership

Living in Bozeman means sharing resources. Bozeman residents are lucky to have access to a high-quality supply of water from the source - the snowpack in the mountains around town. However, as Bozeman grows this limited resource gets shared in more and more directions. Without water conservation, Bozeman could be facing a water shortage within the next 15 years. One of the City of Bozeman Water Conservation and Stormwater Division’s many programs to help residents conserve and protect water is education of 5th-grade students using the Bozeman Water Conservation and Stormwater Management curriculum developed through a partnership between the City of Bozeman and the Project WET Foundation. Now, the City of Bozeman is partnering with MOSS to provide the Water Wise Kids program free of charge to ALL local 5th-grade classrooms. Qualified MOSS instructors will visit your classroom and facilitate these engaging hands-on lessons directly with students. All lessons support NGSS and Common Core standards (see the first page of each lesson for details)!

Water Wise Kids - 2023/2024 School Year

In its third year, the program aims to reach ALL 5th-grade classrooms in Bozeman Public Schools during the 2023/2024 School Year

  • All Bozeman Public School 5th grade classroom teachers are eligible

  • The program consists of three separate visits by MOSS instructors:

    • Visit 1 - students learn what a watershed is and discover the Gallatin River watershed specifically; they also begin a home water audit project

    • Visit 2 - students learn about how seasonal snowpack affects Bozeman’s water supply and learn about easy-to-implement home conservation techniques; they continue their water audit project by implementing some of these techniques at home

    • Visit 3 - students follow the path of storm water around and away from their schoolyard and think about where the City’s storm water goes and what it might carry with it; they also conclude and evaluate their water audit project

  • Each visit is designed to be about one to one and a half hours, but we will work with you to fit within your classroom schedule.

  • Each lesson supports NGSS and Common Core standards at the 5th-grade level.

  • MOSS will reach out to 5th grade teachers at each Bozeman School to schedule programming.
