Cedar Mathers-Winn

Master Naturalist Instructor

Since he was a kid crashing around after lizards on California’s central coast, Cedar has spent as much time outside as possible. Obsessed with the sounds of the natural world, he has followed a long and circuitous path through ecosystems around the world. He has worked as a recordist on a traditional music expedition in Bhutan and as an audio archivist of both music and natural sound recordings. A passion for bird sounds and observations has led him through the mountain West, the lush Northeast, the tropics of Australia, and the pasturelands and jungles of the Dominican Republic. Eventually, Cedar found his way to Montana and decided this state was just about the best of all the places he’d been.

Cedar’s passion for nature in contagious and generously shares his knowledge and enthusiasm with anyone who would listen and learn. As naturalist and educator, he has taught a great variety of topics in biology and natural history –both in the classroom and in the field to undergraduates, professional scientists, and the public. When not teaching or working as a scientist in bioacoustics, Cedar enjoys writing, making music, recording all manner of sounds, and being outside with no other goal or purpose than just being outside.
